I have always had a huge love for animals, starting at a young age. I used to bring every stray I found home. When I finished school I completed a Fetac Level 5 course in Veterinary Assistance. It was only an insight into what I wanted to do. So from there, I went on to complete my Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Nursing in Athlone. It was a tough three years. At the moment, I am completing a distance learning course in Canine Behaviour and Training.
Before I went to college I had started minding a dog for a neighbour. She was telling me how difficult it was leaving her elderly Red Setter in kennels when she had to go away for work. I used to go into her home to care for her dog, in an environment she knew and felt safe. Thats where Knocknarea Pet Services started! I had built a small number of clients at that stage and deciding to go to college was a hard decision. Luckily for me, my clients stayed with me, and often their pets would come off to Athlone on their holidays with me! My housemates were doing the same course as myself so as you can imagine they were delighted when I arrived with my four legged friends. During first year in College, I fostered a staffy pup from a local rescue group, Holly. In a day, I had fallen head over heels! Holly was adopted by me and travelled with me every week up to Athlone. On days we needed pets in to college to learn how to complete different techniques, such as restraining for injections etc, Holly would come in and sit proud as punch, loving the attention! Holly now comes walking with me, and is fantastic at keeping the dogs close on walks. She has excellent recall so when she comes back, the rest follow. She's my assistant.
I really feel my background in Veterinary Nursing has and will stand to me when caring for your pets. I can offer advice on health and behaviour, as well as having my practical nursing skills to care for your pets if they become ill.
Knocknarea Pet Services, I hope, will grow from strength to strength. I love my job and love caring for my rather large extended family.
